How to install Cinnamon desktop on Ubuntu Linux?

Cinnamon is a free and open-source desktop environment developed by Linux Mint. It is the fork of GNOME 2 and the default desktop environment of the Linux Mint distribution.

Cinnamon offers an easy-to-use, intuitive graphical user interface and has a feel of the Windows operating system.

Prerequisites

To follow this guide you should have the following.

• A system running Ubuntu
• Access to a user account with sudo privilege

How to install Cinnamon desktop in Ubuntu Linux

There is an unofficial flavor of Ubuntu called Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix is available which comes with the default Cinnamon desktop on it.

If you don’t want to download or install it you can simply install the Cinnamon desktop to your Ubuntu system by following the steps that are given below.

Before you install a package make sure your Ubuntu system is up to date –

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y

Next, use the given command to install the Cinnamon desktop to your system –

sudo apt install cinnamon

Press y and then enter if it asks for your confirmation.

Based on your internet speed it can take some time, once it gets downloaded and installed on your system use the following command and reboot your system.

reboot

On the login screen click on the Settings icon which is given at the bottom right corner of the screen here click on Cinnamon.

Now enter your password and log in to your Ubuntu system. Now this will display the Cinnamon GUI as you can see in the image below.

If you installed it on the Ubuntu server then use the given command to start the GUI –

startx

Now for any reason, if you want to remove the Cinnamon desktop from your Ubuntu system then first go back to your original desktop environment i.e. GNOME, and then run the given command in your terminal –

sudo apt remove cinnamon -y

Remove any unused dependencies from your system by using –

sudo apt autoremove
