How to install Steam on Ubuntu?


Many of you love playing computer games. Steam is an application that makes gaming easier and more accessible on the Linux platform. In this article, I will discuss what is Steam and how to install it on Ubuntu.

What is Steam?

Steam is a video game distribution platform which is developed by Valve. Originally it was launched to provide automatic updates to games by Valve later it was expanded to include third-party games. It offers services like digital rights management (DRM), video streaming, server hosting, and social network, etc.

It provides functionalities like installation and automatic update of games, community features like friends and groups, cloud storage, and in-game voice and chat.

Prerequisites

You should have access to a user account with superuser privileges on the Ubuntu system where you are going to install Steam.

How to install Steam on Ubuntu

To install Steam on Ubuntu you should have the multiverse repository enabled on your system. You can use the given command to add or enable it.

sudo add-apt-repository multiverse

Next, run the update command.

sudo apt update

Now use the given command to install Steam on your system.

sudo apt install steam

If it asks for confirmation press y and then enter. This will start downloading and installation process.

Install Steam from Ubuntu software center

Alternatively, you can download and install Steam on your Ubuntu system from the Ubuntu software center. Open Ubuntu Software and search Steam when it appears click on Install to install it on your system.

Open Steam on your system

Once it gets installed on your system you can open it from the activities dashboard. Search Steam and click on the icon when it appeared.

And finally, you will see the given screen where you can sign up or login into your existing Steam account. Here login to your account and start using this application.

How to remove Steam from Ubuntu

Now for any reason in the future, if you want to remove this application you can do this by using the given command.

sudo apt remove steam

OR go to Ubuntu software and find steam finally click on Remove to uninstall steam from your system.
